‘Jelly bellies’ memo costs Florida police chief his job

Thursday, November 2, 2006

Winter Haven, Florida police chief Paul Goward was tired of seeing fat hanging out over the belts of some of his officers. So he posted a memo to encourage the so-called ‘jelly bellies’ to get in shape.

The memo, entitled ‘Are You A Jelly Belly?’ didn’t single anyone out, and, apart from the title, didn’t call anyone names.

Goward, a former deputy police chief in Wichita, wrote “If you are unfit, do yourself and everyone else a favor. See a professional about a proper diet and a fitness training program, quit smoking, limit alcohol intake…Don’t mean to offend, this is just straight talk. I owe it to you.”

It provided a list of 10 reasons cops should get fit. Goward said that overweight cops poorly represent the profession, are liable to ‘poop out’ when chasing suspects, and may have to use a higher degree of force.

In the end, Goward resigned from his position as police chief.

Bathroom Remodeling: Easy Tips For A Successful Bath Makeover

By Yakove Vahava

A bathroom makeover project can either fill your thoughts with nice and gleaming white bath surfaces or maybe something like a half assembled remodeling disaster. As soon as your bathroom remodeling project gets done, your project may just turn out to be a fun task after all. A bathroom makeover is among the most popular home improvement projects. Whether it is the addition of a new bath or remodeling an old one, here are few important tips that you have to keep in mind for you to make the most out of this project.

How far would you want to go for this bathroom makeover?

— The simple surface modifications. On an easy end of the scale, you may prefer the general layout and size of your bath and the structures that support it such as walls, joints and etc. The ultimate mantra of surface level alterations is ‘to cover and not replace’. You can always do a simple tub reglazing or perhaps a wall repainting to give your bath a refreshing new look.

— Changing your bath interior layout. The structural elements are fine, you may want to change the surface alterations and also alter the layout around your bathroom.

— Complete tearing out and remodeling project. At this point, you have already reached the most difficult end of the scale. You want to do all the tasks that were mentioned above but the 50 years of accumulated moist in your bath has already worn out your joists, wall studs and even your bath window is falling out.

Financing your bath remodeling project

Bath renovations can get pretty costly. A total bath makeover would costs around $15K to $18 just for the usual functional remodel. Even though many baths are small, the costs arise from the subcontracting services that you may need (plumbers, electricians) and other expensive items involved (cabinets, fixtures & etc.). One of the most popular ways of financing a bath remodeling project is through a home equity loan. While you are looking at your financing options, it would also be wise to think about how you can save on your bath renovation costs.

Bath Renovations: DIY or hire a professional contractor?

During this point in time, you may have to decide whether you want to do this project yourself or hire a remodeling pro. If you think you are that motivated and your task simply involves the usual surface alterations, then you can always do the project yourself. But remember, not all tasks are created equal. The installation of a new toilet can be simple, but the construction of new tiled shower should only be done by professionals. Take note which projects you can do yourself and the ones that are better left to the skilled hands.

— Permits. Building, electrical and other permits may be needed for this project. Make sure you go apply for one before even the project starts.

— Contractor license. Hire licensed contractors that have the necessary skills for quality workmanship.

Tub and Shower Refinishing, Repair and Replacement

The tub and shower comprise the heart of bath and for many homeowners, these are the reasons for a bathroom remodeling project. If there are cracks, then you can always self repair acrylic/fiberglass tub at an affordable cost. if you think the surfaces are stained and discolored, then a tub refinishing would be helpful.

Iraqi restaurant hit by suicide bomber

Thursday, December 11, 2008

A suicide bombing in Iraq has killed at least 55 people and injured at least 120 more, according to local police. The suicide bomber struck at a restaurant located about 2 miles north of the ethnically mixed city of Kirkuk on Thursday morning. The Abdullah restaurant, where the explosion took place, is popular among Kurdish officials. The attack comes on the Muslim religious holiday Eid al-Adha, known in English as the “Festival of Sacrifice”.

At the time the restaurant was struck, it was full of families marking the final day of Eid. Five women and three children were among the dead.

Kirkuk is the scene of ongoing ethnic tensions, although the reasons for this attack in particular are currently unknown.

Salam Abdullah, 45, was one of the people in the restaurant at the time of the attack. “I held my wife and led her outside the place. As we were leaving, I saw dead bodies soaked with blood and huge destruction,” he stated, commenting on his experiences. “We waited outside the restaurant for some minutes. Then an ambulance took us to the hospital.”

Awad al-Jubouri, who was injured in the incident, condemned the bombers. “I do not know how a group like al-Qaida claiming to be Islamic plans to attack and kill people on sacred days like Eid. We were only meeting to discuss our problems with the Kurds and trying to impose peace among Muslims in Kirkuk.” Jubouri is a tribal leader, who was attending a lunch that was intended to precede a meeting discussing was to lessen tensions between local communities.

Last July, an affiliated restaurant of the same name was the site of a suicide bombing which claimed the lives of six and wounded twenty five.

Wednesday, September 29, 2010

Joseph Cerniglia, a chef who had appeared on Gordon Ramsay’s television show Kitchen Nightmares, has commited suicide. Cerniglia was the owner of Italian restaurant Campania. He jumped off a bridge into the Hudson river on the New York–New Jersey border. At the time of filming in 2007, Cerniglia owed suppliers $80,000.

Officials reported that 39-year-old Cerniglia had jumped off of the George Washington Bridge into the Hudson. His death has officially been ruled as suicide. His body was retrieved from the river after reports of a man jumping off of the bridge.

Ramsay released a statement to the Press Association saying “I was fortunate to spend time with Joe during the first season of Kitchen Nightmares. Joe was a brilliant chef, and our thoughts go out to his family, friends and staff.”

Cerniglia told Ramsay about his personal debt when he came to the restaurant in 2007. He said “I am financially in trouble. The debt of the restaurant alone is overwhelming. My personal debt — wife, kids, mortgage — that’s a lot of debt”.

Open source game developer Perttu Ahola talks about Minetest with Wikinews

Tuesday, June 30, 2020

Recently, Finnish open-source video game developer Perttu Ahola discussed Minetest, his “longest ever project”, with Wikinews.

Started in October 2010, Minetest was an attempt by Ahola to create a sandbox game similar to Minecraft. Minecraft is a multi-platform commercial game, which was in alpha version when Ahola challenged himself to create something similar to it from scratch, he told Wikinews.

Minetest is an open-source game, which is free for anyone to download and play. It is written in the C++ programming language, and the source code is available on code-hosting site GitHub. According to Ahola, Minetest attempts to run on older hardware, with limited graphics, but to be accessible to more people: those who have outdated technology, and making it available for no cost. Minecraft, on the other hand, is a paid game, currently costing USD 26.95 for its computer version. Minecraft is currently owned by Microsoft, and performs poorly on older hardware.

A correspondent from French Wikinews contacted Perttu Ahola via Internet Relay Chat a few weeks ago, discussing Minecraft. This interview is built on top of the previous interview, as we take a deeper dive into knowing more about this free game which is about to turn ten years old in a few months.

With the intent of being more than just “something that gets you high,” this dinner is an elevated experience for those who enjoy cannabis for more than just the psychedelic effects. The last event, held on the 21st of January was heralded as “The moveable feast for forward-thinkers. A 5-course dining experience created by Ted Corrado, artist Dahae Song and nVoid.” and featured an immersive 5-course sensory exploration of our own philosophy in plant-forward cooking; with food and art seamlessly intertwined to heighten your experience.”

The first of its kind to be seen in Canada, byMINISTRY’s events boast “design-led locations, collaborations with local and international chefs, artists and creators, and some damn interesting table talk” and feature the work of byMINISTRY culinary director Ted Corrado, who formerly worked at The Drake Hotel and the Royal Ontario Museum kitchen as head chef. Corrado is known for his “cannabistronomy” expertise and joined byMINISTRY late last year to bring his plant-forward food and drink to all byMINISTRY spaces and events.

According to The GrowthOp, for one of the most recent meals, Chef Corrado “chose to keep the cannabis dosage for the entire meal under 10 mg.” In an interview with the chef post-event, he stated that “the first two courses had 5 mg of THC and the dessert, in an attempt to balance things out, was high in CBD. I wanted the guests to not only enjoy the night but walk out feeling in control,” he says.

Every dish has been designed to elevate the mind and palette, with cannabis creatively woven into each bite. An example of the menu can be found here, on the DesignTO site.

To comply with strict regulations set by Health Canada, the dinners are set in a private, undisclosed location, and only open to those who are 19 years of age or older; all attendees are required to sign a waiver that outlines that no attendee purchased cannabis on-site, but was rather just purchasing the experience and services provided by byMINISTRY.

This is not the only endeavour put forth by byMINISTRY, who announced mid-2019 that they would be launching “Consumption_Lounge,” an 8,000 square foot lounge that allows cannabis enthusiasts everywhere to enjoy cannabis-infused, plant-forward food, drinks, and products. This project is just waiting on legislation to evolve before fully opening; currently, the The_Lab, which is the first culinary school for gastronomic exploration in cannabis-infused cooking is open and managed by Chef Corrado.

What’s next? The next series, kicking off in February will bring together the talents of Chef Corrado and Chef Matt Ravenscroft, known for his work at Toronto vegan-mainstay, Rosalinda. Afghan pilot kills nine Americans

Thursday, April 28, 2011

Eight American troops and one contractor were shot and killed by an Afghan National Army Air Force pilot Wednesday. Five Afghan soldiers were also wounded in the attack, for which the Taliban has claimed responsibility.

The incident, which began around 10 a.m. Afghan time (0530 UTC), occurred in the operations room of the Afghan Air Force in Kabul International Airport. The shooter, Ahmad Gul Sahebi, was killed by NATO forces.

“Suddenly, in the middle of the meeting, shooting started,” said Afghan Air Corps spokesman Colonel Bahader. “After the shooting started, we saw a number of Afghan army officers and soldiers running out of the building. Some were even throwing themselves out of the windows to get away.”

The shooter’s brother, Hassan Sahebi, said, “My brother was a little depressed recently, but he had served with Afghanistan’s national army for 20 years. He loved his country and his people. He was a good man.” He also said that his brother was facing financial troubles, but was not connected with the Taliban. A spokesman for the militia group, however, described Ahmad Gul Sahebi as an informant and sleeper agent who began planning the shooting five months ago.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai quickly condemned the attack and offered condolence to the victims and their families. He also said that the police and military would investigate the matter. Wednesday’s incident is the seventh this year in which NATO or Afghan forces have been killed by rogue Afghan troops or insurgents dressed as troops.

World’s first double arm transplant undertaken in Munich

Saturday, August 2, 2008

A 54-year-old German farmer who lost both arms in a farming accident six years ago has become the first patient to receive a complete double arm transplant. The patient, whose name has not been released, underwent the operation at the Klinikum rechts der Isar, part of the Technical University of Munich (Technische Universität München), last week; he is said to be recovering well.

The operation lasted 15 hours and was performed by a team of 40 specialists in Plastic Surgery, Hand Surgery, Orthopedics and Anesthesiology, under the direction of the head of the Plastics and Hand Surgery department, Prof. Hans-Günther Machens, Dr. Christoph Höhnke (Head of Transplants, Senior Physician; Plastics and Hand Surgery) and Prof. Edgar Biemer, the former Chief of Plastic Surgery at the Clinic.

In a press statement released by the clinic, it was revealed that the patient had been thoroughly physically checked and had psychological counselling prior to the surgery to ensure he was mentally stable enough to cope with the procedure. Since completion of the surgery, the patient has been on immuno-suppressant drugs to prevent rejection of the new limbs.

Following the surgery, the press release from the clinic’s press manager, Dr. Tanja Schmidhofer, included the following statement:

The flow of blood was [re-]started in intervals of 20 minutes because the anaesthetists had to make sure that the patient would not suffer from the blood flowing back from the transplanted parts. No significant swelling was seen, nor indeed any ischemia (lack of blood flow to the tissues). This is a testament to the surgeons who established a fully functioning blood flow…the main nerves, the Musculocutaneus, Radial and Ulnar nerves were all attached and sewn together, and finally an external fixator was applied, with pins in the lower and upper arms, avoiding the risk of pressure points and sores. The operation was successfully completed after 15 hours.

Without the immuno-suppressant drugs given to the patient, the risk of there being a Graft-versus-Host Reaction or GvHR, would have been significant due to the upper arm containing a large amount of bone marrow, consisting of ICC’s or Immuno-Competent Cells, which would have triggered a near total rejection of the new limbs. A GvHR is a condition which results in the cells from the transplant attacking the immune system of the body.

Indications from the clinic suggest that the double attachment went well, although it could be up to 2 full years before the patient is able to move the arms.

The donor arms came from an unnamed teenager, who is believed to have died in a car accident.

What Is Rennet?

What is Rennet?

by

Leon van der Westhuizen

Rennet is used in the production of cheese as a milk curdling enzyme. It converts milk casein (protein) from a soluble to an insoluble material and during this process; the rennet separates the milk into solids (curds) and liquid (whey).

The different milk coagulation systems available is natural animal rennet rennet from GMO organisms, coagulating enzymes from plant origin and coagulating enzymes from non-GMO microbial origin.

Animal rennet is the best, but a lot of people prefer not to use it, because of religious views. The closest product is rennet from GMO origin, since chemically it is just like rennet of natural, animal origin, but here we also have a protesting fraction of people, because they believe this type of product will harm them in some way. They thus do not perceive this as natural .

Plant coagulation enzymes are not used commercially, since they are very hard to standardize and usually have a lot of side reactions that can cause off-tastes and other problems in cheese.

Microbial rennet of non-GMO origin has vastly improved and now has very few side- reactions. This rennet is used in large amounts in the world, since it is classified as Halal, Kosher and vegetarian. Technically these are not rennet, but milk coagulating enzyme. Different organisms are used to produce non-GMO microbial rennet.

Microbial rennet is a food grade enzyme system produced by the controlled fermentation for non-genetically modified Rhizomucor miehei . It contains the specific protease activity that makes it effective as a milk clotting enzyme. The rennet have been specially treated to make the enzyme thermal labile sensitive to inactivation by heat at pasteurization temperatures. Rennet can be bought in tablets and as liquid or paste.

As the economical alternative to cloned/ calf rennet, microbial rennet liquid has the same uses, process conditions and clotting time.

When buying rennet, certain characteristics need to be taken into account. This will include activity of 1:50,000 MCU/ml, form which should be a dark brown liquid, solubility (miscible with water), odorless and a specific gravity of approximately 1.14g/ml.

Rennet requires the availability of calcium ions for activity. Calcium, added as calcium chloride should be in the range of 10 to 100 grams per 100 litres of milk for optimum performance. The effect of calcium chloride concentrates on the activity of various enzyme samples and is superior to animal rennet.

Enzyme use levels are generally dictated by processing conditions, milk composition and calcium chloride concentration. In a general a rate of one half that of regular strength calf rennet can be used, but laboratory or pilot scale tests should be run to optimize dose levels.

Effective working temperature range plays a big role in performance. Calf rennet has a much narrower range of optimum working than most of the new rennet systems.

Due to rennet s thermal labile nature, extra care should be taken when storing rennet; therefore it should be stored in sealed containers under refrigerated (4 C to 8 C) to minimize the loss of activity.

When using rennet to coagulate milk, always make sure to check the specification sheet of the product that you plan to use, to make sure that you are using it in the rifgt way to get the most out of that specific product.

China overtakes Germany as world’s biggest exporter

Sunday, January 10, 2010

Chinese officials have said that their country’s exports surged last December to edge out Germany as the world’s biggest exporter.

The official Xinhua news agency reported today that figures from the General Administration for Customs showed that exports jumped 17.7% in December from a year earlier. Over the whole of 2009 total Chinese exports reached US$1.2 trillion, above Germany’s forecast $1.17 trillion.

Huang Guohua, a statistics official with the customs administration, said the December exports rebound was an important turning point for China’s export sector. He commented that the jump was an indication that exporters have emerged from their downslide.

“We can say that China’s export enterprises have completely emerged from their all-time low in exports,” he said.

However, although China overtook Germany in exports, China’s total foreign trade — both exports and imports — fell 13.9% last year.
