Barnes & Noble

Barnes & Noble, Inc. is a Fortune 500 company, the largest retail bookseller in the United States, and the leading retailer of content, digital media and educational products in the country. The company operates 661 retail stores (as of May 3, 2014) in all 50 U.S. states in addition to 700 college bookstores that serve more than 5 million students and faculty members across the country.[4] Barnes & Noble also operates BN.com.

Barnes & Noble operates mainly through its Barnes & Noble Booksellers chain of bookstores and the company’s headquarters are at 122 Fifth Avenue in the Ladies’ Mile Historic District in Manhattan in New York City.[5] Barnes & Noble College Booksellers is headquartered in Basking Ridge, NJ.

After a series of mergers and bankruptcies in the American bookstore industry since the 1990s, Barnes & Noble stands as America’s last remaining national bookstore chain.[6][7] Previously, Barnes & Noble operated the chain of small B. Dalton Booksellers stores in malls until they announced the liquidation of the chain. The company is known for large retail outlets, many of which contain a café serving Starbucks Coffee. Most stores sell books, magazines, newspapers, DVDs, graphic novels, gifts, games, music, and Nook eReaders and tablets. Video games and related items were sold in the company’s GameStop retail outlets until October 2004, when the division was spun off into an independent company.

Barnes & Noble originated in 1886 with a bookstore called Arthur Hinds & Company, located in the Cooper Union Building in New York City.[8][9] In the fall of 1886, Gilbert Clifford Noble, a then-recent Harvard graduate from Westfield, Massachusetts, was hired to work there as a clerk.[10] In 1894 Noble was made a partner, and the name of the shop was changed to Hinds & Noble.[11] In 1901 Hinds & Noble moved to 31-35 W. 15th Street.[12]

In 1917, Noble bought out Hinds and entered into a partnership with William Barnes, son of his old friend Charles; the name of the store was changed accordingly to Barnes & Noble.[13][14] Charles Barnes had opened a book-printing business in Wheaton, Illinois in 1873; William Barnes divested himself of his ownership interest in his father’s firm just before his partnership with Noble and it would go on to become Follett Corporation. Although the flagship store once featured the motto “founded in 1873,” the C.M. Barnes-Wilcox Company never had any connection to Barnes & Noble other than the fact that both were partly owned (at different times) by William Barnes.

In 1930, Noble sold his share of the company to William Barnes’ son John Wilcox Barnes.[15][16] Noble died on June 6, 1936, at the age of 72.[17] In the long history of the bookstore, the namesake partnership was a brief interlude of thirteen years.

In 1932, at the height of the Great Depression, the bookstore was moved to a flagship location on 18th Street and Fifth Avenue,[18] which served as such until it closed in 2014. The Noble family retained ownership of an associated publishing business and Barnes & Noble opened a new publishing division in 1931.[16] In 1940, the store was one of the first businesses to feature Muzak; it underwent a major renovation the following year.[19] That decade the company opened stores in Brooklyn and Chicago.[20] William Barnes died in 1945 at the age of 78 and his son John Wilcox Barnes assumed full control.[20] The company underwent a significant expansion in the 1950s and 1960s, opening an additional retail store on Twenty-third Street in Manhattan and shops near the City University of New York, Harvard and other Northeast college campuses.[21]

The business was purchased in 1971 by Leonard Riggio for $1.2 million.[21] By then it had been badly mismanaged over the prior two years and consisted only of “a significantly reduced wholesale operation and a single retail location—the store at 105 Fifth Avenue.”[21] In 1974, Barnes & Noble became the first bookstore to advertise on television and a year later, the company became the first bookseller in America to discount books, by selling The New York Times best-selling titles at 40% off the publishers’ list price.[22] During the 1970s and 1980s, Barnes & Noble opened smaller discount stores, which were eventually phased out in favor of larger stores. They also began to publish their own books to be sold to mail-order customers. These titles were primarily affordable reissues of out-of-print titles and selling them through mail-order catalogs allowed Barnes & Noble to reach new customers nationwide.[22]

In November 1974, in response to a question from a member of the studio audience, the British twin brothers Norris McWhirter and Ross McWhirter, who were editors of the British-produced Guinness Book of Records, claimed on the BBC One television programme Record Breakers that the Fifth Avenue store of Barnes and Noble had overtaken that of London’s Foyles bookshop to become the world’s biggest bookstore.[23]

Barnes & Noble continued to expand throughout the 1980s and in 1987 purchased the primarily shopping mall-based B. Dalton chain from Dayton Hudson. The last B. Dalton stores were slated to close in January 2010.[24] In 1989 Barnes and Noble had purchased the 22-store chain Bookstop. Solveig Robinson, author of The Book in Society: An Introduction to Print Culture, wrote that the purchase “gave [Barnes and Nobile] the necessary know-how and infrastructure to create what, in 1992, became the definitive bookselling superstore.”[25] The acquisition of 797 bookstores turned the company into a nationwide retailer and as of the end of fiscal year 1999, the second-largest online bookseller in the United States.[24] B&N’s critics claim that it has contributed to the decline of local and independent booksellers.[26]

Before Barnes & Noble created its web site, it sold books directly to customers through mail-order catalogs. It first began selling books online in the late 1980s, in an early generation venue called Trintex, a joint venture between Sears and IBM, but the company’s website was not launched until May 1997.[27] According to the site, it now carries over 2 million titles.[28]

In 2002, Leonard Riggio’s brother Stephen Riggio was named CEO, a position he held until 2010.[29] The Barnes & Noble Review, an online literary site, was launched in October 2007. It featured book reviews, columns, and interview from critics and authors such as Michael Dirda, John Freeman, A.C. Grayling, Ezra Klein, Paul LaFarge, Mark Sarvas, Dava Sobel, Neal Stephenson, Stephen King, and Greil Marcus.[30] Music critic Robert Christgau has also written essays for the site.[31]

In March 2010, William Lynch, formerly the president of the company’s website, was appointed CEO. He is credited with helping launch the company’s electronic book store and overseeing the introduction of its electronic book reader, the Nook. Many observers saw his appointment as underscoring the importance of digital books to Barnes & Noble’s future. Steve Riggio stayed on as vice chairman.[32]

After the bankruptcy and closure of its chief competitor, Borders Group, in 2011,[33] Barnes & Noble became the last remaining national bookstore chain in America.[6][7] This followed a series of mergers and bankruptcies in the American bookstore industry since the 1990s, which also saw the demise of Waldenbooks, Barnes & Noble’s own subsidiary B. Dalton and Crown Books, among others. Barnes & Noble’s largest physical bookstore rival is now Books-A-Million, which does not operate in the Western US. Barnes & Noble also faces competition from general retailers, especially from Amazon.com, and from regional and independent booksellers.

On July 8, 2013, the company announced the resignation of William Lynch as Barnes & Noble CEO and board member, effective immediately. No immediate replacement was named.[34]

On January 8, 2014 it was announced that Michael P. Huseby would become the new CEO of Barnes and Noble. Huseby had joined Barnes & Noble as Chief Financial Officer in March, 2012, and led the Company’s financial organization until his appointment as President in July, 2013. Prior to joining Barnes & Noble, he worked in the media communications industry, most recently having served as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Cablevision Systems Corporation.[35]

On June 25, 2014 it was announced that Barnes & Noble will spin off the Nook Media division into an independent publicly traded company.[36]

Barnes & Noble publishes some of the books it sells, inexpensively reprinting non-copyrighted titles or acquiring the U.S. or English language rights from another publisher. In addition, Barnes & Noble commissions reprint anthologies and omnibus editions using in-house editors.[citation needed]

Barnes & Noble began to publish books during the 1980s,[citation needed] when they started reissuing out-of-print titles. One of these titles, The Gentle Art of Verbal Self-Defense by Suzette Haden Elgin, has sold over 250,000 copies.[27] The reissued edition of The Columbia History of the World by John Garrity, for example has sold over 1 million copies.[27]

Since then, the company has expanded its publishing operation. This expansion was aided by the company’s acquisition of SparkNotes, an educational website and publishing company. Further expansions of the company’s publishing business include the purchase of how-to publisher Sterling Publishing in 2003.[27]

From around 1992 through early 2003, Barnes & Noble released a series of literary classics for adults and children under the imprint Barnes & Noble Classics. Originally available only in hardcover, most titles came in a black or cream-colored dustjacket edition. In 2003, Barnes & Noble revamped and expanded its line of literature classics, releasing books in hardcover, trade paperback and mass-market editions.[citation needed]

In addition, Barnes & Noble has a second paperback series called the Barnes & Noble Library of Essential Reading.[37]

The first store to feature a café serving Starbucks beverages was in Springfield, New Jersey in 1993. Since then, most stores have been amended or constructed specifically to feature a cafe serving Starbucks beverages, Harney & Sons or Tazo Tea, FIJI Bottled Water, bakery goods from The Cheesecake Factory, candy from Godiva Chocolatiers, sandwiches and other specialty products. Although the cafés are owned and operated by Barnes & Noble, servers follow Starbucks’ standards in beverage preparation.[citation needed] The Barnes & Noble membership card is accepted to receive a discount on any café related goods.[38]

In 2004, Barnes & Noble began offering Wi-Fi in the café area of selected stores, using SBC FreedomLink (now the AT&T Wi-Fi network). All stores currently offer Wi-Fi, an effort which was completed in 2006. As of July 27, 2009, Wi-Fi is offered for free to all customers.[39]

Barnes & Noble hires community relations managers to engage in community outreach. These managers’ responsibilities include organizing in-store events, such as author appearances, children’s storytimes and book groups. Community relations managers also work closely with local schools and groups to promote literacy and the arts. For example, Barnes & Noble sponsors a children’s summer reading program that promotes literacy and puts over 2 million books into the hands of the children each year.[40] Barnes & Noble also hosts bookfairs, which raise funds for schools and libraries and an annual holiday book drive to collect books for disadvantaged children. 1.16 million books were collected and distributed in 2007.[41] To promote nationwide literacy among 1st to 6th graders and encourage more reading during the summer, Barnes & Noble has implemented a summer challenge: if children read 8 books and write about their reading, Barnes & Noble will give the readers a free book.[42]

Barnes & Noble Nook is a suite of electronic book readers developed by the company,[43] based on the Android platform. The first device was announced in the United States on October 20, 2009 and was released November 30, 2009, for $259.[44] On June 21, 2010 Barnes & Noble reduced the Nook’s price to $199, as well as launched a new Wi-Fi-only model, for $149 and released a Nook colored touch screen for $249.[45]

The Nook competes with the Amazon Kindle, Kobo eReader, Sony Reader, and color devices used sometimes as readers like Apple’s iBooks for the iPhone, iPad, iPod touch and other e-readers. Various Nook models feature a 6-inch or 7-inch touchscreen.[46] Version 1.3 of the Nook introduced Wi-Fi connectivity, a web browser, a dictionary, chess and sudoku games and a separate, smaller color touchscreen that serves as the primary input device. The Nook also features a Read in Store capability that allows visitors to stream and read any book for up to one hour while shopping in a Barnes & Noble Store. According to a June 2010 CNet article, the company plans to expand this feature to include periodicals in the near future.[47] The color version of the Nook introduced a 7-inch color touchscreen and the ability to view at a portrait or landscape orientation.[48]

On April 30, 2012, Microsoft invested $300 million for a 17.6% stake in Nook, which valued the business at about $1.7 billion.[49]

In November 2012, the technology publications Techdirt and Mashable criticized the license agreement with which Barnes & Noble sells ebooks to consumers, pointing out that the rights to re-download a purchased ebook expire when the customer’s credit card expires and a valid credit card must be added to the account to restore this functionality.[50][51]

In June 2014, the company announced a partnership with Samsung Electronics to make Nook tablets, as the bookseller moves forward with plans to revamp its digital business.[52] Barnes & Noble has also announced that it will spin off its Nook Media division into a separate publicly traded company. The company’s objective is to take the steps necessary to complete the separation by the end of the first quarter of the 2015 calendar year.

Barnes & Noble College Booksellers, Inc., headquartered in Basking Ridge, New Jersey, is a subsidiary of the company which operates bookstores at more than 600 institutions of higher education. College Bookstores was previously owned by company chairman Leonard Riggio.

Barnes & Noble College Booksellers also operated the self-proclaimed “world’s largest bookstore” on Fifth Avenue and 18th Street in New York City from 1932 to 2014. This flagship store carried a large variety of textbooks, medical and legal books and medical supplies in addition to the various trade titles carried at the company’s main stores.[citation needed]

NYC students attempt to revive stoop culture

Saturday, February 17, 2007

A trio of freshmen at a New York design school say that residents aren’t taking advantage of a valuable and countless resource found all around the world: stoops.

In Sit Here, a campaign inspired by a recent class project, Sarah Feldman, Chelsea Briganti and Essence Rodriguez are using fliers placed around New York to encourage residents and visitors to get to know one another on their stoops.

Wikinews got a chance to talk to Sarah Feldman, web designer for the project. Feldman is also responsible for getting different news sources to contact the team, such as the Brooklyn Papers and New York Magazine.

Sit Here has been noticed in at least 15 different news sources, including Wikinews.

Imagine Cup – fina?y konkursu informatycznego dla studentów

W ci?gu dwóch tygodni poznamy zwyci?zców konkursu Imagine Cup organizowanego przez firm? Microsoft.

Konkurs Imagine Cup jest dwuetapowy – najpierw eliminacje krajowe (odby?y si? w kwietniu 2011), a nast?pnie fina?y ?wiatowe w Nowym Jorku (8-15 lipca 2011). Polsk? reprezentuje zespó? CodeRiders z ?odzi.

– Pomy?la?em, ?e fajnie by?oby, aby dru?yna z Politechniki ?ódzkiej wygra?a Imagine Cup.

CodeRaiders zaprojektowali i stworzyli aplikacj? dedykowan? honorowym dawcom krwi!

G?ównym zadaniem systemu LifeCircle+ jest zniwelowanie braków krwi w centrach krwiodawstwa, zapewnienie jej odpowiedniej ilo?ci i szybko?ci dostarczenia w nag?ych wypadkach oraz promocj? idei krwiodawstwa w najpopularniejszych mediach spo?eczno?ciowych – mówi Marcin Franc mentor zespo?u CodeRaiders.

Jedyne ograniczenia obecnie to problemy formalne no i finanse – mówi Marcin.

Inne, wybrane programy stworzone w ramach konkursu:

G?osowanie trwa do 11 lipca 2011 roku.

Eye Catching Embroidery Designs

Submitted by: Embroidery Opw

I am a digitizer of designs for machine embroidery. Most people don t know what that means. But, if you have a passion for machine embroidery, you know exactly what it means. If I m lucky, you also like what I do. I know that I love what I m doing, so others enjoying it as well is simply the best feeling in the world!

It was ten years ago that I finally broke down and got my first embroidery machine. Prior to that, I felt that I had little use for one and even less time to devote to it. Oh, I quickly changed my tune. My quilting passion took the back seat as I became quickly devoted to the world of machine embroidery. It was not long after that I decided I wanted to try my hand at creating my own designs, and that s when I was hooked for life.

Being a digitizer, and working for myself, isn t glamorous or anything like that. I get up, have some coffee, take care of the pets and then wander to my computer. If I m working on a set of designs, I just take up where I left off. If I don t have current work going on, I can spend an entire day doing trial designs to see which direction I want to go. Sometimes I m lucky and find my way instantly. Other times, I end up with a handful of various designs with no rhyme or reason between them. But, even this gives me a handful of options for new sets of embroidery designs. Nothing is wasted.

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aXvF8qFjSH4[/youtube]

One problem I run into as a designer is that I don t know what it is that others look for in the machine embroidery designs they want. I like red work and lacy designs first, and then I prefer those with a full-fill look and good outlines. Not everyone likes these. I can only design what I like, so there may be a disconnect between my designs and those in need of them. For the most part, I simply follow the rule of doing what I know.

Because I am also a creative stitcher, I digitize designs thinking of the projects they will be used in. Most of my sets come with a free pattern. This is the part I truly love because it gives me the opportunity to teach! Of course, problems can arise if my instructions include specific embroidery supplies that others may not have. So, I must try to use only those most common items. This is a challenge at times, but a challenge is exactly what I need to keep my career exciting.

On the rare occasion that I get together with other digitizers, one of our common issues is that we don t know what our followers would like most. More lace? Less flowers? In-depth instructions for basic techniques? We really don t know unless someone contacts us to tell us what they would like. Some people don t want to seem like they are complaining and so don t contact us. Believe me, as long as the comments are respectful, they can complain as much as they want! Of course, suggestions are even more helpful!

So, if you have a passion for machine embroidery designs, why not give your favorite designers a call or an email to tell them how you feel about their designs. If there s something you re looking for and have been unable to find, tell them so! While we are all highly creative, we run out of ideas all the time.

Help us to help you and we ll all be happily stitching!

Jokela High School reopens after deadly multiple shooting

Saturday, November 17, 2007

Jokela High School in Tuusula, Finland, scene of the Jokela school shooting, has recommenced classes. Earlier this month, student Pekka-Eric Auvinen, 18, fatally wounded eight people with his handgun before turning the weapon on himself in the country’s worst ever school shooting. He died later in hospital, having never regained consciousness.

All last week repair teams have been working to eradicate all traces of the event, with large numbers of bullet holes in walls and doors being filled in, broken windows and torn blinds being replaced, and total renovation of one corridor which Auvinen had attempted to set fire to.

Students had previously been permitted into the school last week, in order to collect belongings left behind as they rushed to evacuate the school. On Monday, the school’s 450 pupils began to attend temporary facilities set up at nearby Tuusula Primary School as well as the local church.

Tuusula spokeswoman Heidi Hagman told reporters yesterday that at first school days would be considerably shortened, adding “Today the students will spend time getting used to the renovated and repaired school area.

“Students and teachers are getting support from Red Cross crisis workers and psychologists during the first days of school.”

Esa Ukkola, head of education in Tuusula, spoke to reporters about the fact that students had been shown around the renovated school. “We need to show there is nobody lurking in the cupboards any more. We’re trying to have as normal a school day as possible. There are dozens of extra people to ensure we can do everything in small enough groups.”

The shooting has prompted public anger in Finland at the media attention directed to it, with a feeling that it undermines the placid reputation of the country. People have questioned the decision of a survey last month to designate Finland as the world’s “most livable country”. Psycho-social service manager Anna Cantell-Forsbom from nearby Vantaa has spoken out about her view that the shooting was mainly caused by a lack of psychiatric care available to the Finnish youth and therefore did not reflect on Finnish society. The shooting has also prompted a move by the Finnish government to raise the legal age for gun ownership from 15 years to 18 years.

Finland is expected to set up a commission of inquiry this week to investigate the murders. The government will set aside resources for the ministry of social affairs, health and education as well as the local municipality for the investigation. Meanwhile, local authorities have shown a four-year response plan to the government, asking for five million Euro to fund it. Half will go towards therapy and occupational guidance for affected residents, while the other half would go to school guidance counsellors, psychologists, school healthcare personnel and other experts. The ultimate goal of the plan is the complete recovery of those adversely affected by the shooting.

BP: New cap on Gulf of Mexico oil well in place

Thursday, July 15, 2010

For the first time since April 20, no oil is flowing into the Gulf of Mexico, though the halt may be temporary, as integrity testing began on a new sealing cap. The cap was installed on a leaking well in an effort by the BP energy company to contain oil spewing into the Gulf of Mexico. The previous containment cap, which was removed Saturday, had a much looser fit than the new one and allowed oil to escape into the Gulf. It took about three days for the cap to be removed, the site prepared, and the new one to be slowly lowered into position.

The energy company had planned to begin running integrity tests Tuesday to measure the performance of the well under pressure. The tests were delayed a day for further analysis, but clearance to proceed was given Wednesday afternoon, then a leak in a choke line had to be repaired. BP senior vice president Kent Wells announced at his Thursday afternoon briefing that the final valve on the cap assembly started to close at 1:15 PM Thursday and was fully closed at 2:25 PM, finally shutting in the oil flow. If the tests show that the well is strong enough, the sealing cap valves will likely remain closed. If the well cannot be safely closed from the top, the new cap is designed to funnel almost all the oil to ships above while two relief wells are constructed for a permanent fix. After the old cap was removed, oil flowed freely into the waters of the Gulf until the present cap was installed at about 7:00 PM CDT Monday (00:00 UTC Tuesday).

BP has stated that this oil containment system has never been deployed at the current depths, nor has it been tested in the conditions that it will be expected to operate in. During the testing period, which could last anywhere from six to forty-eight hours, all undersea oil containment systems will be temporarily suspended. The company made clear that, even if the tests succeed, this does not mean that oil leakage has permanently ceased.

Doug Suttles, a BP executive, explained that during the test, the well pressure will be carefully monitored. Suttles said at a Monday briefing that the ideal would be for tests to show high pressure around the seal, indicating that no oil is escaping. He also stated that on the other hand, the pressures could be lower than anticipated, leading to the assumption that the well is damaged and is leaking oil and gas into surrounding rock. If this were to happen, keeping the cap shut could further damage the well. The solution for this scenario is to reopen the valves and funnel most, if not all, of the oil to ships above.

Drilling of the first relief well was suspended until completion of the integrity test. Kent Wells explained at his Wednesday morning briefing that the first relief well is now 4 feet from the original well and there is a remote possibility that the pressure test could open a path to the relief well. Drilling of the second relief well has stopped at 16,000 feet so as not to interfere with the first well and to keep routing options open in case the first relief well fails. Even if the pressure tests do succeed and the main well is shut, work on the first relief well will continue until it intercepts the main well. When this occurs, mud and cement will be pumped into the well for a permanent seal. Containment and clean up operations will continue even after the relief wells are finished to deal with oil already released.

The Deepwater Horizon oil spill began on April 20 when the Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded, killing eleven and marking the start of the worst offshore oil spill in United States history.

This past Sunday, Illinois Governor Pat Quinn signed into law a bill known as “Rocky’s Law” that requires Illinois high schools, through the local school district, to buy catastrophic injury insurance up to US$3 million or medical costs for up to five years, whichever one comes first, that covers student athletes. The insurance must cover student athletes while they are competing.

The legislation was named after Rasul “Rocky” Clark. In 2000, the Eisenhower High School football player became paralyzed from the waist down as a result of a tackle during a game. His school based health insurance covered the costs of his medical treatment. A legislator sponsoring the bill noted that the need for this type of insurance is rare. Clark’s mother attended the legislation signing. Her son died last year.

Before parents can claim money from school insurance, they first must pay out US$50,000. Schools have until January 1, 2014 to comply with the law. Schools cannot charge students more than US$5 to defray the cost of insurance. If a school district already requires student to be covered through private health insurance, they are exempted from this law.

I’m not quite understanding why liberals think that this is such a good thing, except the liberals that own stock in insurance companies. One thing I know is that car insurance, which anyone who drives is required to have, is too expensive, especially if you’re young because they automatically assume that young people are going to be reckless. Now, with the individual mandate, I expect that health insurance companies will jack prices up knowing that people have to have it, and they’ll probably do the same thing the car insurance companies do; they’ll charge more for young people because they’re supposedly reckless, they’ll charge more for people with preexisting conditions, they’ll jack your premiums up if you ever go to the hospital, etc. How is this supposed to help the poor? Also consider the fact that there are a lot of people that will not take government aide, look at all the homeless people that are homeless because they refuse to go on welfare. How will taxing them for not having insurance help them?

No opinions yet?

I find it sad and funny that Obama spoke of how this is a lovely plan to help people and make sure noone is uninsured in times of need and yet the part that was cut was the one that would’ve extended Medicaid benefits to the people at the bottom of the income scale.

And my bet is that was Robert’s attempt to throw a bone to the right-wing to make them somewhat.

How To Prepare An Effective Budget Plan For A Project

Submitted by: John Smith17884

Introduction

When a project is started, it is essential that a plan is drawn to facilitate its smooth functioning. During the phase of the Project Plan it is equally important to plan the Project Budget. Planning the expenditure and incomes of the project helps to monitor the money spent on the project. A good Project Manager always tries to ensure that the resources are allocated as per requirements and necessity. It is the responsibility of a Project Manager to ensure that a project is well-managed financially. Project Management Professionals (PMPs) who have cleared the PMP Exam by taking a PMP Exam Prep course are well-aware of budgeting their project to ensure successful run of the project.

1. Define Scope of your Project: – Before drawing a budget for the Project it is important to know all pertinent details about Project. When undertaking a fresh and new project it is important to find out about all the required raw materials and workforces needed for the project. Then drawing an estimated duration and estimated funds for the project gives the required information to make a guesstimate of project funding.

2. Set your goals: – Once the project limit and deadlines are finalized then set your budget goals. Begin with the end in mind while drawing out the budget goals. A set goal helps to create a more structured spending and keep the project set towards that ultimate goal. For example your goal could be to complete the project within a specified amount and with optimum usage of all available resources. In such a case, it becomes important to structure money spent in the project in a specific way.

3. Know your net Expenditure: – After setting the goal it is important to have rough estimate of what is going to be your net expenditure. Your net Income may be fixed or variable based on the resource allocated for the project. PMP Aspirant during their PMP Prep uses the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK ) Guide, 5th Edition, in which the topic of budget is covered.

4. Make your Budget plan: – With the collected data about scope, goal and net expenditure it time to plan the allocation for each individual expenditure based on categories. By dividing the various expenditures into different categories aids in tracking spending on the project. Having a contingency plan for the money spent on the project, prepares the PMPs to look out for any untoward change in the planned project expenditure.

5. Analysis of Tracked Spending: – Create a matrix for calculating and tracking the project expenditure. If the project is similar to any previous project handled by the company then use that particular project s financial matrix for tracking the spending in your current and new project.

6. Allowance for Modification: – No two same or similar project run the same way as the other. So it is important to be ready to make modification as the project rolls out. Thus, it is important that the budget should not be very tight and has some provisions for some malleability of spending.

7. Create Budget: – Using all the above information prepare the budget for the Project and find the required Accounting software application to use for entering your expenses and incomes. Choosing the popular accounting software like Quick Book or Microsoft Accounting provides you with various tools to calculate and account your project expenses and revenues.

8. Budget Evaluation: – This step comes once the budget plan is implemented and after a few weeks have passed since implementation. The best time to evaluate a budget will be to test your financial predictions against one month performance. Based on the information that you gather on actual performance of your project budget, now plan your modification or changes to the budget expenditure. A PMP Exam Prep Course covers pertinent Budgeting topics for PMP Aspirant thus providing a wide spectrum view of the financial aspect of the project.
