Wife of missing soldier receives green card

Saturday, June 30, 2007

Yaderlin (Hiraldo) Jimenez, the wife of missing US soldier Spc. Alex Jimenez, who was due to be deported has been granted a Green Card by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.

Mrs. Jimenez’s Immigration troubles began shortly after her wedding to Spc. Jimenez on June 14, 2004, at Fort Drum, NY where his U.S. Army unit was stationed. When the couple attempted to cross the border between the U.S. and Canada on their honeymoon, the newlyweds were detained, held for several hours and released.

In 2006, the couple were granted a deferment of immigration proceedings until Spc. Jimenez returned from his second tour of duty in Iraq. However on June 20 the government announced its intent to deport Yaderlin Jimenez, despite the fact that her husband was declared missing along with two other soldiers, last month.

The case quickly received national attention and the involvement of influential U.S. Senators Ted Kennedy and John Kerry. Two days later, Homeland Security Chief Michael Chertoff announced that he had instructed immigration authorities to take immediate action to resolve the case of Yaderlin Jimenez.

Yesterday, while standing victorious with his client on the steps of Citizenship and Naturalization Services building in downtown Buffalo, NY, Jimenez’s attorney Matthew Kolken said now that this ordeal is behind her, she can return to “using all of her focus and energies to hope and pray that her husband’s going to come home alive.”

Dominican murder draws light to anti-Haitian sentiment

Thursday, February 12, 2015

Yesterday’s discovery of a bound man, believed to be of Haitian ancestry, hanged from a tree in Santiago, Dominican Republic has drawn attention to anti-Hatian sentiments in the nation.

The Dominican Republic and Haiti between them make up the island of Hispaniola and Dominicans have grown concerned by Haitian immigration in recent years. Police say they believe the man, known to his friends as Tulile, was murdered during a robbery. Police officers anonymously told reporters a winning lottery ticket may have been the motive.

Aged around 23, Tulile made his living shining shoes and taking commissions from money lending in the area he was murdered. Bound hand and foot, his body was found at dawn in Ercilia Pepín park, Sabana Larga street. The scene is close to the University Hospital Jose Maria Cabral y Báe, around which Tulile worked.

This week saw the public burning of Haiti’s flag in Santiago by local residents, saying it symbolised their rejection of Haitian immigration. The issue is a hot topic, with a court ruling two years ago retrospectively stripping Dominicans born to unregistered Haitian parents from 1930 onwards of their citizenship.

Only 7,000 of an estimated 200,000 eligible residents have signed up for residency cards, a scheme instigated by the government in the face of international pressure. The deadline to apply for the permits, which allow citizenship after two years, has passed.

“They shouldn’t have to apply for residency,” said Santiago Canton of the Robert F Kennedy Center for Human Rights in a Guardian interview. “They are Dominicans.” Canton said the murder should be viewed “in the context of constant discrimination and violence against Haitians”.

It is about time that a country stood up to America over this. I used to think that if I was drafted, that I would go, but you know what, I would rather be labeled as a criminal from an unjust war then be force to work for this corrupt government as a murderer. Good for deserters. They will help show the government that we will not fear them.

We need to get back to the day when the government feared the people, and worked for the people. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 207.171.180.101 (talk) 10:23, 23 September 2008 (UTC)

As for the guy who insists on dropping the fbomb, Constitutional rights dont apply anymore. I can think of a dozen ways I could nail someone for using their first amenedment rights. Defamation Anyone? 164.116.47.180 (talk) 16:01, 27 January 2010 (UTC)

So, is this just a quick way to immigrate? When I brought my husband here from the US it took 3 years. Maybe he should have just enlisted in the military and deserted here. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 206.248.186.147 (talk) 11:10, 23 September 2008 (UTC)

This man voluntarily signed up for military duty then decided that he didn’t like fighting. If he doesn’t like fighting why sign up in the first place? Furthermore, we as Canadians shouldn’t be supporting or rewarding this kind of dereliction of duty. What kind of message are we sending to our own soldiers when we allow things like this to happen? That its OK to play army and fool around with guns and big boy toys but when we actually need you to fight you can desert and we won’t mind? Hinzman should be sent back to America and prosecuted to the full extent of the law. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 206.248.181.162 (talk) 13:57, 23 September 2008 (UTC)

Because they signed up for the military to defend the United States, and defend the constitution. This war was both unconstitutional under US law and illegal under international law. Therefore, they should be allowed to stay. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 129.97.20.208 (talk) 22:13, 23 September 2008 (UTC)

Precisely what he said ^ . Did we find WMD’s? I still cant understand why anyone would be still be behind the war in Iraq after all of the pretenses have been proven false. Why fight a war that you have no just reason to fight? We found Saddam, but we did not find Bin Laden. Or so we did and “we let him go” but thats a whole other topic. The reason we went overseas was to fight a war on terror, not to help and aid other countries that need help after starting a war in thier land over FALSE PRETENSE —Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.242.47.62 (talk) 23:09, 23 September 2008 (UTC)

All he should get is a firing squad. Over 4000 Good man and women die (by choice) for the Freedom of the Iraqi and Afghan People and this guy pussy out and find a age old reason not to fight (religion). He is a typical scum who took the Military benefits but dos not want to fight for his county. And Canada is showing it’s a haven for traitors and cowards yet again. –66.229.17.181 14:01, 23 September 2008 (UTC)

Canada should hand these theses deserter back to USA before it is too late. How dare these people to leave the army. They should be given maximum punishment. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 122.111.130.180 (talk) 16:20, 23 September 2008 (UTC)

during the vietnam war people moved to canada to avoid conscription. This soldier volunteered. He had signed a contract that was legally giving up his rights to the government. It seems real glamorous to sign up and be a hero but the truth is war is ugly. He has realized this but is still held by the contract. There should be a way to legally remove yourself from service without legal recourse. Thats the problem you see,its not that canada shouldn’t send him back. They should. Its that the the services should have a cancel contract clause. This of course can’t apply during tours in foreign countries. But barring a history of m.i.a. or you should be able to remove from service when stationed in a us base with viable transportation to a location attainable to there final destination. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.177.63.249 (talk) 17:15, 23 September 2008 (UTC)

Please note, he did serve in Afganistan. This was going to be his second deployment. However, since the Iraq war was started illegally and under false pretenses he has moral objections. It is the duty of an officer to refuse to follow orders he feels are unlawful. I believe starting a war under a false guise would count. He is clearly not afraid to fight because he has already done for. Simply put, he doesn’t want to fight for the wrong reasons. And neither would I. 216.113.208.150 18:10, 23 September 2008 (UTC)

All these crazy jingoist idiots have no idea what war is really like. The contract between soliders and the state has been broken by the state. The regulations on the time length for deployment and troop rotations have been violated. I am glad this guy is safe now. All of the other allied soliders should be recalled. This war is a travesty to military planning and seves no legitimate national interests for anyone other than Israel. Let them fight it. 65.1.172.18 18:14, 23 September 2008 (UTC)

There’s no relevance between loving the country you’re in and agreeing with every decision it makes. There arises a problem when citizens of a nation do not question the decisions being made for them. I love the United States of America, and most of what it stands for. I’ve lived here all my life, but that is not to say that I love all the decisions being made for its citizens by its leaders. Those who oppose anyone that voices their [controversial] opinion, especially when the opinion is shared by nearly half the nation, do not deserve the label of faithful patriots. Rather, they should be known and should call themselves blind patriots. The foundation of this country is based primarily on opposition to misaligned or corrupt leadership that would’ve otherwise been blindly accepted by all.

If a man is opposed to an order given to him, which is followed by an outstanding percentage of the population, and takes the proper steps to avoid conflict, is he not exhibiting the same ideology as that of our founding fathers? After all, who knows whats better for you than yourself?

The simple fact is that desertion is a crime, in any country. This is not an issue of conscription, these people voluntarily signed on the dotted line, and agreed to fight; in that regard, they should face the consequences that coincide with breaking that oath. As a Canadian, I believe it isn’t our place to be deciding who is sent home to face crimes they have committed. Whether or not we as Canadians disagree with the Iraq War, or even the War in Afghanistan is a topic for another forum of discussion. The law is the law, these people agreed to abide by it, regardless of their personal views. That is military service; if you can’t handle it, don’t join. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.68.155.24 (talk) 20:40, 23 September 2008 (UTC)

While he did Sign on the Big red line, he realized what he was doing was wrong, and fled. Its not glamoruos, But it was -Probably- the right thing to do, Morally. Considering if this was truely against his consience, the guilt would drive him mad. 164.116.47.180 (talk) 15:57, 27 January 2010 (UTC)

Canada has already had problems with draft dodgers. I used to visit Nelson, BC every summer, and you would think you are back in the 60s because of the number of them. They even wanted to have a monument for the dodgers. However, I would not like to be in their place… [1] —Preceding unsigned comment added by 137.186.54.102 (talk) 00:01, 24 September 2008 (UTC)

Home-invaders pose as NYC police

Monday, July 16, 2007

In two separate incidents, men posing as members of the New York Police Department (NYPD), have invaded homes in the New York City area. In both cases, they robbed the residents, but in the most recent, they sexually assaulted a woman.

On Saturday, July 14, at 1:09 a.m. EDT (UTC-4), four men knocked on the door of a Yonkers, New York, apartment. The 33-year-old male that lives there opened the door, as the men outside wore NYPD hats and t-shirts, and had badges hanging around their necks.

The men promptly ordered the male victim to the floor. “When this guy pushed me, he had a gun in my face,” the victim said. “I could see the other guy. He motioned to the others, come on, let’s go, let’s go.” The intruders shouted “Where are the drugs?” as they ransacked the apartment.

Two of the men entered the bedroom and sexually assaulted the 30-year-old female. The couple has a five-year-old child, who was sleeping in another bedroom. “The more I resisted, the more he began to hit me,” the woman said. She said she was sexually assaulted by two of the men while her boyfriend was bound and guarded.

Police said the men then left with a cell phone, a laptop computer, a diamond ring and a gold chain. Police do not believe that they were real officers. As of this afternoon, no arrests have been made.

On Thursday, July 5, shortly after six p.m. in the East New York neighborhood of Brooklyn five men knocked on the door claiming to be “the police.” When the victims opened the door, they pushed their way in demanding the family give them drugs and money.

When police responded to a call reporting a robbery, they found the family, husband, wife and their daughter, tied up. The man suffered a head injury when he was pistol-whipped. Police say the robbers got away with a camera, jewelry, and US$5,000 in currency.

Neighbors told NY1 that they were stunned. “Frightened. Make you think twice before you want to open the door, you know,” said one of the neighbors. “Now you be asking for all this ID and stuff and even still you’re going to wonder, are they for real? So it’s kind of scary.”

There is no word about whether the two cases are connected. Yonkers is on the border of New York City, but is outside the jurisdiction of the NYPD.

Zimbabwe government allocates US$10 million for relocation of thousands of families near diamond field

Saturday, November 14, 2009

The Zimbabwean government has allocated US$10 million worth of funds for the relocation of thousands of families living near the Chiadzwa diamond fields in the Manicaland province.

Murisi Zwizwai, the Deputy Mines Minister, said that the funds would be used to build houses for the residents in the area, and for developments in . “I can confirm that US$10 million has been set aside for the relocation. The relocation may take place after they have harvested their crops,” he said in an interview, as quoted by the New Zimbabwe news agency.

Zwizwai also added that “the money would be used to build new houses, clinics among others.” According to him, the residents would not be relocated until the 2009–10 agricultural season.

6 Tips For Dog Training How To House Train A Dog

By Tim Lee

The dog is said to be man’s best friend. However, there are certain moments that dog owners get a little frustrated, and yes, sometimes angered by their pet dogs because of their innate rage to pee in every corner of the house.

How convenient would it be for dog owners if their dogs were a little bit more obedient? Getting one’s dog trained is a very good idea since it relieves the owners of the hassles of cleaning every corner of the house.

However, getting professional trainers to do the job can really a hole in one’s pockets, this is why more and more people are doing house training for their dogs. Here are some tips on how to house train a dog:

1. Observation is the key

From the start, one should observe his dog or puppy during times when he is excreting. This will tell a lot about the warning signals and the different signs that dogs are making when they are about to unload it. Perhaps, one can take down notes on what specific time of the day the dog wants to do “his thing” and what behavioral signs does he give when he is about to do it.

2. Go outside

Make it a point to make the dog feel comfortable outside the house. Let him explore your garden (but don’t let him destroy the plants) for him to find a comfortable spot to relieve himself. Do this everyday and the dog will eventually be more comfortable in doing this outside the house.

3. Stay with him

When house training your dog, always make sure that you stay with him until he finishes. If you leave him by himself, he will have the tendency to do other things such as explore the garden or chase other animals.

4. Be patient

This tip is especially effective for puppy owners. When puppies arrive in a new home, he will feel very uncomfortable at first and will usually cry during the night. Owners should be observant to be able to identify the signals that the puppy gives to communicate that he would want to relieve himself. Owners should carry him to the designated place every time he does these signals so as to give him a message that excretion is to be done outside.

5. Never use ammonia-based cleaners

During house training, dog owners should never use ammonia-based cleaners to clean their houses. These substances’ smell is a lot like that of urine’s. Dogs will have the tendency of peeing on corners which smell like urine, so avoid using these substances.

6. Don’t be harsh on the dog

There will be times that the dog or puppy will make a mess inside the house and there are cruel dog owners who would punish their dogs too much. Some slap their dogs with newspapers or other things (God knows what) or stick the dog’s nose into his mess. This should be avoided since the owner has the sole responsibility of making sure that the dog does not make a mess inside the house.

These are just some few tips on house training a dog. Remember that a dog is like a family member who should be taken cared of and loved.

Harvard University officials update Agassiz Neighborhood Council about local construction in Cambridge, Massachusetts

Thursday, April 28, 2005

Cambridge, Massachusetts — Harvard University planners met with the Agassiz Neighborhood Council to update the community about Harvard’s construction and expansion plans in the neighborhood on April 26, the Harvard Crimson reported today. The two major topics discussed were the Northwest Science Building, which is currently under construction on Oxford Street, and the expansion of the Harvard Law School. According to the Crimson, Harvard officials outnumbered the number of community members present at the meeting.

The plans for law school expansion are still unfinished, the Crimson reported. The director of community relations at Harvard, Thomas Lucey, said that Wyeth Hall may be demolished. According to the Law School website, Wyeth Hall is “the most popular dormitory at Harvard Law School”. It is adjacent to the Berkman Center for Internet and Society on Massachusetts Avenue, just south of Three Aces pizzeria.

The Crimson also noted that Tom Murray, the project manager for the Northwest Science Building, was slated for completion by May of 2007, with landscaping completed the following spring.

A visit to the science building site by Wikinews reporter Pingswept last week verified that the pouring of cement had begun. Four large cranes had been brought to the site; one of them was being used with a clamshell attachment twice the height of a grown man to dig a deep trench. The truck “wheel wash” station marked on the site plan was operational, in the form of a man with a pressure washer, though in this reporter’s brief observations, more windshields were washed than dirty tires.

Gyrocopter lands on US Capitol’s west lawn

Saturday, April 18, 2015

Douglas Mark Hughes, a mailman for the United States Postal Service, landed his gyrocopter on the west lawn of the US Capitol on Wednesday. He told his friends he was going to do this.

The mailman was flying his aircraft into restricted airspace when he landed on the lawn. He was immediately arrested. His stated intention was to deliver letters to all members of Congress concerning campaign finance statutes. As a protective measure, the Capitol complex went on lockdown for a time.

Hughes told the Tampa Bay Times of his intentions to fly the light-weight aircraft. The paper said they alerted the Secret Service and the United States Capitol Police, but FOX News reported some disagreement about this from Capitol Police. Hughes had no contact with air traffic controllers during the incident.

The mailman said his intention was non-violent, but he wanted to spread the word about his cause. The Secret Service questioned him some months before the incident.

Hughes was charged under United States Code Title 49, concerning transportation. He was released from jail under conditions including that he must not visit the US Capitol. He is currently under house arrest.

Besides this low-flying aircraft incident, a government employee crashed a drone onto the White House property a few months ago. Also, the Secret Service conducted drone exercises to combat against possibly rogue light-weight aircraft last month.

The airspace above the Washington D.C. region is protected below 18,000 feet MSL (Mean Sea Level) with the roughly fifteen-nautical-mile-radius Flight Restricted Zone which surrounds the VHF omnidirectional range located at Washington National Airport, which handles regularly scheduled commercial flights. Pilots are not allowed to fly in the Washington, DC Metropolitan Area Special Flight Rules Area, which includes the Flight Restricted Zone, unless they have FAA authorization and are able to maintain effective communication with air traffic control with a two-way radio. Pilots must obtain a transponder code when flying under visual flight rules in this area. Law enforcement and air ambulance operations are exempted from the FAA authorization requirement if they can maintain communications with air traffic control.

The FAA was investigating this incident, along with law enforcement agencies. Police found no explosives in the aircraft.
