Recall of Thomas the Tank Engine toys due to lead-paint fears

Thursday, June 21, 2007

A recall issued last week for Thomas the Tank Engine toys made in China and containing lead-based paint, is the latest scare for consumers, and follows recent scandals involving Chinese-made pet food, pharmaceuticals, toothpaste and other toys, The New York Times has reported in a series of articles.

Last week, RC2, a U.S. toy company based in Oak Brook, Illinois, issued a recall for its popular wooden “Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends” train sets. The recall involved 1.5 million “Thomas Wooden Railway” vehicles and train sets sold at toy stores and various retailers across the U.S. from January 2005 through June 2007.

A subsequent recall has been issued in the United Kingdom, where Thomas the Tank Engine was originated in the 1940s as a character in a children’s story by the Reverend W.V. Awdry. Around 70,000 toys are involved in the U.K. recall, according to The Guardian.

“RC2 has determined that the surface paints on the recalled products contain lead. Lead is toxic if ingested by young children and can cause adverse health effects,” the Consumer Product Safety Commission said in a press release dated June 13. “Consumers should take the recalled toys away from young children immediately and contact RC2 Corp. for a replacement toy,” the commission said.

Those “adverse health effects” could include brain and nerve damage, especially in young children, as well as blood and brain disorders. Severe lead poisoning causes vomiting, diarrhea, convulsions, anemia, loss of appetite, headaches and in particularly high doses, coma and death.

In an article on Monday, The New York Times reported that recalls have been issued for 24 different toys in the U.S. in the past year, and every one of them was made in China. According to the Toy Industry Association, toys made in China account for around 70 percent to 80 percent of all the toys sold in the U.S., The Times said.

“These are items that children are supposed to be playing with,” Prescott Carlson was quoted as saying by The Times. Carlson is a co-founder of a child-safety website called Imperfect Parent, which tracks recalls of toys and other baby products. “It should be at a point where companies in the United States that are importing these items are held liable,” Carlson said.

RC2 would not comment to The Times, and a Consumer Product Safety Commission spokesman would not say how long ago the problem with the lead paint was discovered.

For a follow-up article on Tuesday, The Times visited a factory in Dongguan, in China’s Guangdong province, where the “Thomas and Friends” toys are made. The paper interviewed workers and took photos on the factory floor.

“You’re intruding,” a factory manager identified only as Zhong was quoted as telling the reporters. “Tell me, why exactly are you here?”

During the visit, a reporter, translator and a photographer were detained by factory officials, and released a day later after local police and government officials intervened.

The factory also produces other toys for RC2, including toy John Deere trucks, NASCAR racing models and M&M’s cars, The Times said. RC2 makes the toys under licenses from various companies. The “Thomas and Friends” toys are made under license from Hit Entertainment, which owns the “Thomas” brand.

According to RC2, items in the “Thomas and Friends” recall are:

 • Red James Engine & Red James’ # 5 Coal Tender
 • Red Lights & Sounds James Engine & Red James’ #5
 • Lights & Sounds Coal Tender
 • James with Team Colors Engine & James with Team Colors *#5 Coal Tender
 • Red Skarloey Engine
 • Brown & Yellow Old Slow Coach
 • Red Hook & Ladder Truck & Red Water Tanker Truck
 • Red Musical Caboose
 • Red Sodor Line Caboose
 • Red Coal Car labeled “2006 Day Out With Thomas” on the Side
 • Red Baggage Car
 • Red Holiday Caboose
 • Red “Sodor Mail” Car
 • Red Fire Brigade Truck
 • Red Fire Brigade Train
 • Deluxe Sodor Fire Station
 • Red Coal Car
 • Yellow Box Car
 • Red Stop Sign
 • Yellow Railroad Crossing Sign
 • Yellow “Sodor Cargo Company” Cargo Piece
 • Smelting Yard
 • Ice Cream Factory

Toys listed that are marked with codes containing “WJ” or “AZ” are not included in the recall.

Earlier, RC2 said that customers would have to cover shipping costs to return the toys to the company. It later agreed to cover postage after angry complaints by parents, The Times said in an article yesterday. Refunds will take about two months.

Intel ends partnership with One Laptop Per Child program

Friday, January 4, 2008

Microprocessor company Intel Corporation has quit the board of directors for the One Laptop Per Child association (OLPC), a non-profit organization that aims to provide children in developing countries with inexpensive laptops. An Intel spokesman cited a “philosophical impasse” as the reason for the split.

Intel joined the OLPC board in July 2007, agreeing to give financial and technological support to the project. Development began on a new laptop using an Intel processor rather than the current processor made by Advanced Micro Devices, a rival of Intel. A prototype of this machine was expected to be unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show in Les Vegas, Nevada, which begins in a few days.

According to Intel spokesman Chuck Mulloy, OLPC had repeatedly asked Intel to abandon its support for the Classmate PC, a similar laptop designed for children in developing countries, and focus entirely on the OLPC program. “At the end of the day, we decided we couldn’t accommodate that request,” Mulloy said.

OLPC President Walter Bender said in an interview that Intel’s resignation will have “no impact” on the program. “We never really got much going with Intel to have an impact,” Bender said. He criticized Intel for a “seemingly half-hearted effort” in developing the new laptops and for using the agreement to make “marketing statements”.

Gooseneck Light for Any Type of Bulbs that Works for You

by

Jeffrey ZaragosaGooseneck light

is also known as rlm lighting, which is a great solution for highlighting signs and awnings. Goosenecks are designed to be mounted above or to the side of a sign.

Rlm lights

normally have a long shepherd hook shaped arm that gets the fixture out of the way from the sign being lit. For more customized look, you can contact your manufacturer for specification according to your own taste. But remember that there is a wide variety of rlm lights that work on numerous configuration so finding the right goosenecks are not hard to find.

The good thing about the rlm lighting is that you can choose the type of bulb that you can use for your fixture. You can choose from fluorescent gooseneck light fixture, metal halide, low or high pressure sodium to incandescent

gooseneck light fixture

. Rlm lights brings more retro look to a building and you can make it more modern as well.

The incandescent light makes light by heating a metal filament wire to a high temperature until it glows. The hot filament is protected from air by a glass bulb that is filled with inert gas or evacuated. Incandescent bulbs are gradually being replaced in many applications because of its pure ratio of visible light to heat generation. Moreover federal law has scheduled incandescent light bulbs to be phased out by 2014 to be replaced with more energy- efficient light bulbs. This is sometimes used in gooseneck light fixture.

Fluorescent tube or bulb is a gas- discharge lamp that uses electricity to excite mercury vapor. The excited mercury atoms produce short-wave ultraviolet light that then causes a phosphor to fluoresce, producing visible light. This is good to use for rlm lighting because it converts electrical power into a useful light more efficiently than incandescent.

Metal halide lamps are members of the high- intensity discharge family of lamps, produce high light output of their size, making them a compact, powerful, and efficient light source that is good to use for rlm lighting. Rare earth metal salts are added to the mercury vapor lamp, to improve luminous efficacy and color emission.

A sodium vapor lamp is a gas discharge lamp that uses sodium in an excited state to produce light. This type of lamp causes less light pollution than mercury- vapor lamps, many cities that have large astronomical observatories employ them. This is also used for sign lighting and commonly used in gooseneck light fixture.

There maybe different types of bulbs available for you but one thing for sure that the housing and the arms of your goosenecks are the same. You may choose a variety of light but all these things makes a perfect match for your rlm lighting.

Indonesia is to carry out DNA tests on the body of a man killed in the Temanggung district of Central Java. The body is believed to be that of Noordin Mohammed Top. Born in Malaysia, Top is believed to have been behind a string of terrorist attacks in Indonesia since 2002, including the 2002 Bali bombings and the bombing of the Marriott and Ritz-Carlton hotels this July.

After a 16-hour siege, Indonesia’s elite Detachment 88 stormed a building in Beji village that police intelligence officers believe was occupied by Top and his group.

In an unrelated police raid two would-be suicide bombers were also killed; the target of their truck bomb was believed to be a residence owned by Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

Following a mass trial on August 1, at which critics of the Ahmadinejad regime were tried for sedition, Iran has on Saturday initiated a second mass trial of those it accuses of attempting to destabilise the Iranian state. Amongst the dozen accused are staff members of the British and French embassies and a French national. Both France and Britain have protested, with British officials calling the situation “completely unacceptable” and the French saying that the Iranian allegations were “absolutely baseless”.

In what have been described as show trials, opposition leaders have confessed to crimes against the state.

Samantha Orobator, a British 20-year-old from Peckham, London has been returned to the United Kingdom to serve out the remainder of a life sentence for drug smuggling. Convicted in Laos of attempting to smuggle 680g of heroin, Orobator initially faced execution by firing squad, which she escaped only when she became pregnant.

The circumstances of her trial and the circumstances of how she came to be pregnant has led to human rights organisation Reprieve to call for the quashing of her conviction. However the British government has indicated that it will honour its prisoner repatriation agreement with Laos.

Pakistani intelligence service sources state that Hakimullah Mehsud leader of Fedayeen al-Islam has been killed in a fight for the leadership of Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) an al-Qaeda ally.

The statement comes a day after public speculation of the death of TTP leader Baitullah Mehsud in a drone attack on the 5th of August. Baitullah and Hakimullah are cousins with Hakimullah serving as a deputy to Baitullah. The TTP is a coalition of disparate groups and without the charisma and leadership of Baitullah, appears to have fallen victim to internal feuding. According to sources Hakimullah Mehsud met with rival Taliban leader Waliur Rehman to determine the succession, word at the shura became heated and led to a gunfight that resulted in the death of Hakimullah and the serious wounding of Rehman.

Hakimullah had earlier issued statements denying Baitullah’s death.

Safe And Secure Ways For Computer Recycling}

Safe And Secure Ways For Computer Recycling

by

Wisam Abdulaziz

Computers emerged as a necessity in today’s technology-driven world. Computer and computer related devices such as iPads, are now used in almost every aspect of our daily lives whether it is for such purposes as: entertainment, business, social, research, shopping, and much more. In this era of rapidly evolving technology, it is important to consider green solutions when disposing of computers and computer related devices. There is a lot of waste generated from these devices such as toxic chemicals, metals, and plastics. Computer recycling is an important method of safely and securely disposing of these electronic devices.

Computer recycling is the process of recovering or salvaging the computers, by which they can be disassembled in a safer way and used for an entirely different purpose or in different products. The major purpose of recycling computers and other electronics is to ensure that toxins do not end up in landfills where they can leach into the soil and affect the environment, including the water table. As well, reusing computers such as refurbishing them means less computers are being constructed which means less metals such as tin, silicon, iron, and aluminum are being used and less waste is being generated in the manufacturing of the computers.

Whether you recycle your computer, give it to a charity, or sell it, it is important to delete the data so that someone else does not find sensitive personal information. Deleted data can often be retrieved if the data is not permanently destroyed. If not properly deleted, the data points are still retrievable so someone with the right tools can retrieve data on the drive. Measures you can take to permanently delete data include taking a hammer to the disk and there are companies that put the disk through a shredder which physically alters it and thereby alters the magnetic storage media. A certificate confirming that the data has been destroyed will be given to you.

There are a number of methods of recycling computers which include: consumer recycling, corporate recycling, donation, and return to the company. Consumer recycling is giving the computer to a needy charity. Returned to the company will involve the company with a established recycle program taking the computers back for proper disposal or refurbishing.

It is important to take personal responsible to reducing waste in a proper and safe manner. When recycling computers, it is important to do it the right way and give to to the right organization. This will ensure the computer is properly recycled since there are risks involved in losing your data. However, you can take advantage of methods that will ensure your data is properly destroyed which will eliminate the risk of financial loss and identity theft. Recycling your computer in a safe and secure way to dispose of your old computer and it helps protect the environment. The next time you are replacing your computer or other electronic device, make sure you properly recycle it to help the environment and to help someone who cannot afford a brand new computer.

Parts of US airplane fall from sky in Brazil

Friday, March 27, 2009

Portions of a DC-10 jet registered to the Miami, Florida-based Arrow Cargo company fell from the sky over a residential area in the city of Manaus, Brazil on Thursday.

Parts of one of the turbines of the aircraft caused some damage to a car and a few houses, but no injuries were reported. The airplane was traveling to its destination of Bogota, Colombia. According to the Brazilian Defense Ministry, the parts that detached are the rear exhaust diffuser and a section of the exhaust. The involved plane, registered N526MD, was built in 1978.

“I opened the window after I heard this huge boom and I see this thing up in flames, right in front of my doorway,” said Aparecida Silva, a local resident, to Globo TV. “I had no idea what it was, I thought it was some weird, ugly thing or a UFO or something.”((Translated from Portuguese))

Rai Marinho, a representative for the Arrow Cargo in Manaus, said that the jet, which was carrying an engineer and three crew members, had engine difficulties soon after taking off. It was able to keep flying, but was obliged to divert to Medellin due to inclement weather, where it landed without incident. The representative added that his company would pay residents for the damage.

CIA gives up search and interrogation on Iraq WMDs

Thursday, April 28, 2005

The United States Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) says it finished interrogating the nearly 105 Iraqi scientists it held in its search for weapons of mass destruction (WMD). In many cases their information was helpful, but in other cases the wrong people were detained, and were subjected to questioning by “inexperienced and uninformed” interrogators.

From an update to the Comprehensive Report of the Special Adviser to the DCI on Iraq’s WMD, “As matters now stand, the WMD investigation has gone as far as feasible. After more than 18 months, the WMD investigation and debriefing of the WMD-related detainees has been exhausted.

“As far as the WMD investigation is concerned, there is no further purpose in holding many of these detainees. These individuals have shown no reluctance to engage in further discussions should the need for questioning arise about past WMD programs.”

Elsewhere, “Some may have other issues to account for, including Regime finance questions, but certainly some have been quite helpful toward the compilation of an accurate picture of the Regime’s WMD efforts and intentions over the last three decades.”

The comments were addenda and an accompanying note, supplemental to the original report, which was issued last autumn, and seen as the final report of the Iraq Survey Group (ISG). They were added by Charles Duelfer, head of the ISG, and Special Adviser to the Director of Central Intelligence in Baghdad.

Deulfer emphasised that more information is likely to emerge naturally, over time, from people with differing viewpoints and interests. And a backlog of documents recovered from the former regime remain to be examined.

He described the ISG investigation as hampered by:

 • The security situation
 • The quality of identification, detention, and interview of those involved in the Iraqi WMD effort
 • Other internal procedural weaknesses
 • Constant personnel rotations.

A preference for reinforcement of short-term security on the part of the coalition forces over anti-proliferation efforts, fear of arrest and detention on the part of the Iraqi personnel, and other factors in the continuing conflict of the post-war environment, all impacted on the effort by the ISG.

The report confirms the expressed opinion of former UN weapons inspector, Scott Ritter, that Iraq had no significant WMDs. “[T]here was not a single intelligence service in the world that said Iraq maintained massive stockpiles of weapons of mass destruction,” Ritter said at the time.

Duelfer summary of the intelligence obtained, as understood by the ISG, includes, “[T]he risk of Iraqi WMD expertise of material advancing the WMD potential in other countries is attenuated by many factors and is presently small …”

And, “So far, insurgent efforts to attain unconventional weapons have been limited and contained by coalition actions.”

Also, “There continue to be reports of WMD in Iraq. ISG has found that such reports are usually scams or in misidentification of materials or activities. In a very limited number of cases they have related to old chemical munitions produced before 1990.”

The new addenda included information on the Iraqi Military Industrial Commission, the “state-run military-industrial complex” which played a “central role in the evolution of all the Regime’s weapons programs”.

Death toll from Brazil mudslides rises to sixty

Sunday, January 3, 2010

At least sixty people have been confirmed dead after mudslides in southeastern Brazil, mostly on Ilha Grande, caused by torrential rainfall.

Rescue efforts are still continuing in the state of Rio de Janeiro for people feared to be buried under houses, which collapsed due to the deluge of mud and rain. Rescuers used shovels and heavy machinery to dig through the rubble.

Colonel Jerri Andrade, who is supervising the rescuers, commented on the current status of rescue efforts. “The weather is improving, which helps us with the search, but we won’t rest as long as we suspect that there are more bodies underneath the remains.”

More rain is forecast in the days ahead, making additional mudslides a possibility. The authorities have warned that the death toll could increase as more bodies are found. Three days of mourning were declared in the Rio de Janeiro greater area, and celebrations scheduled for January 6 were called off.

Safety Precautions While Performing Cpr: 7 Points}

Submitted by: Greg Garner

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is a technique that saves lives. CPR includes chest compressions as well as mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. As the person performing CPR, you have to be in close contact with the victim, even breathe into his mouth. Thus, it is essential that you take precautionary measures to avoid any contamination by infected saliva, blood or other body fluids.

Here are certain safety precautions you must keep in mind if you are performing CPR.

Shields and masks: When you perform CPR on a patient be sure to wear a face shield or mask to avoid direct contact with the patient. During rescue breathing, it is possible for fluids to be transferred from patient to you and a mask will protect you. Face shields are transparent and contain a one-way valve through which you can provide the rescue breaths. The mask prevents direct contact with saliva and blood of the patient.

Gloves: If you are a health care worker or a paramedic and administer CPR regularly, you must always wear gloves. This is to avoid direct contact with the patients potentially infected blood, vomit or other body fluids. Your health is important and keeping yourself clean is very necessary to prevent infections. Wash your hands with soap after every CPR administration.

Gowns and Eye gear: In a hospital or clinic setting, it is required that you don gowns and eye gear when you perform CPR in case of blood getting accidentally splattered on your face or eyes.

Disposing dirty equipment: Once you finish CPR, dispose all the dirty equipment like gowns and eye gear, masks and gowns into a bio hazardous bin.

Victims health: The use of protective equipment like masks and face shields not only protects your health but also the victims as the victim has an equal chance of getting an infection.

Lay person: If you are a lay person who happens to perform CPR on a stranger you may not have access to these safety equipment. Therefore, it is advisable that you buy a mask and carry it with you in case you are in a situation and have to perform emergency CPR.

CPR on babies and infants: You must be extra careful when you perform CPR on babies and infants. If the baby is not breathing, perform gentle compressions using maximum three fingers. Perform around hundred chest compressions in one minute. Gently press down with your fingers in the center part of the babys chest below the nipples. When administering rescue breaths, cover the babys nose as well as mouth and breathe twice, each breath being one second long. This is different from an adult as you do not cover the adults mouth while performing rescue breaths. Repeat thirty chest compressions followed by two rescue breaths for as long as it takes for the child to start breathing, or until medical help arrives.

Therefore, you can see that both you and the victim are at risk of contracting infections of any kind from each other. Since the victim is usually unresponsive, it is your responsibility to take safety precautions while performing CPR.
