New York legalizes same-sex marriage

Sunday, June 26, 2011

The New York State Legislature passed a bill Friday that legalizes same-sex marriage in the state. It was signed into law by Democratic governor Andrew Cuomo. New York now becomes the sixth and largest U.S. state with legalized same-sex marriage. The practice is legal in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, Iowa and Washington, D.C..

Four Senate Republicans including Stephen Saland of Poughkeepsie, Mark Grisanti of Buffalo, Roy McDonald of Saratoga Springs, and James Alesi of Rochester, joined 29 Democrats in support, for a margin of 33 to 29. Grisanti defended his vote, stating “I cannot deny a person, a human being, a taxpayer, a worker, the same rights I have with my wife”. Governor Cuomo referred to the four Republicans as “people of courage and…principle.”

I cannot deny a person, a human being, a taxpayer, a worker, the same rights I have with my wife

Gay rights activists, who had spent over $1 million to lobby legislators, cheered the passage, which had failed two years before and had been debated for several weeks. Human Rights Campaign president Joe Solmonese exclaimed that “History was made today in New York. This victory sends a message that marriage equality across the country will be a reality very soon.” New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg hailed the passage as leaving the state “stronger than we were yesterday”.

But detractors of the bill reacted differently. Chairwoman Maggie Gallagher of the National Organization for Marriage blamed the state Republican Party for the passage and argued that “sadly it’s the families of New York who will pay the worst price of the new government-backed redefinition of marriage.” The state’s Catholic Church released a statement that commented that the bill “alter[s] radically and forever humanity’s historic understanding of marriage [and] leaves us deeply disappointed and troubled”.

The new law, which will take effect in 30 days, also allows same-sex couples to be eligible for state marriage benefits.

Semi truck crashes into viaduct in Buffalo, New York

Wednesday, April 23, 2008

Buffalo, New York — According to police in Buffalo, New York, no one was injured after a semi-trailer truck carrying paper from Ontario, Canada hit a railroad viaduct, tearing the truck in half.

At approximately 11:00 p.m. EDT (UTC-4) on April 21, an unidentified man driving the truck westbound on Walden Avenue between Wasmuth and Roetzer streets hit the viaduct which tore his truck in half sending debris and cargo over most of the road.

Police describe the truck’s cabin as a “can of sardines.”

“He made it all the way through, but his truck looks like a can of sardines,” said officers on police radio communications who were on scene.

The driver was given a traffic citation and admits he did not notice signs posted along Walden which state the bridge’s clearance.

The street and the viaduct remained closed into the early morning hours of Tuesday April 22. According to Don Poleto of the city’s Public Works office, the bridge was not damaged.

How To Collect Tea Pots}

How To Collect Tea Pots

by

Victor Epand

Ceramic tea pots are as individual as people themselves and they have a unique decorative design all their own. Also, collectors who build collections of tea pots have discovered that their identifying mark is located on the bottom of the tea pot itself, which lets the collector know who created the tea pot.

People collect tea pots due to the beauty that collectors have found in them. Tea pots have stood as a sentimental piece in many households where families focus their lives around ceremonial teas, daily. Tea pots have craftsmanship that is unlike other objects, which make them distinctive, but collectors need to know that there have been many copies that have been made from originals.

Tea pots from China have a more characteristic uniqueness about them with the lid of the tea top containing a design of the head of a dragon, which is featured on many Chinese art forms. The lids on these tea pots do not come off of the actual tea pot, because they are designed to bob up and down.

With the aid of marine archeology, several antique teapots have been discovered from shipwrecks that occurred all the way back during the fourteenth century. These tea pots have been documented as shipwreck ceramics, which will cause no doubt to their authenticity. These types of tea pots bring with them extra historical and additional archaeological value that cannot be found in other tea pots. Of course, these tea pots will definitely show signs of wear, which can be attributed to their time spent in the sea.

Original tea pots were a western innovation, but the origin is completely unknown. Researchers suspect that vessels or containers that were originally used for serving wine or coffee were used to serve tea at one point and thus the invention of the tea pot.

Traditionally, coffee pots were tall and lean while the tea pot had a more global shape, but there is no practical reasoning for their distinctive shapes. In fact, the first recorded silver tea pot does resemble a traditional coffee pot. Several individuals of that time did not favor the silver tea pot, so the red stoneware tea pots from China soon became available all over the world.

Early shapes of the tea pot were the popular global shape, which contained the short straight spout. As the years passed, so did the shapes which included the octagon and the melon shape. These both were popular. There have been tea pots that have been created with two chambers, which was known as a double tea pot. The eighteenth century Chinese porcelain tea pots were in an octagon pattern and the were produced by silversmiths for the first two decades. The Europeans attempted to compete with the tea pots produced in China, but they lacked the translucency and the fineness that the Chinese tea pots contained.

The first tea pots created in Europe had a heavy cast with a short spout that was replaceable, which were unlike the first tea pots produced in China. Through the years, a type of fantasy tea pot began being produced that included tea pots that were designed as plants, rabbits, frogs, camels, and various other animals. The fantasy tea pots were of poor quality because of the workmanship and the clay used and were ultimately viewed as failures.

Designs of the tea pots began to fall into four main areas which included mock ups of earlier oriental designs, designs that came from early European prints, armorials that bore a coat of arms, and innovative tea pots that had a spout on the interior.

Why A Tag Monaco Watch Is The Ultimate Gift}

Why a TAG Monaco Watch Is The Ultimate Gift

by

Lewis Clifford

There are watches and then there is the TAG Monaco watch. You see if you just want a device for telling the time, then pick something up for $50. However, if you want a an iconic design classic that is a piece of intricate precision engineering, that will have value for many generations, then you want a luxury watch like the TAG Monaco.

The TAG Monaco watch is based on an original design from TAG Heuer in 1969. What made it stand a part from other watches was its iconic square-case, a first in watchmaking. In addition it is powered by the famous Chronomatic Calibre 11, and was the world’s first automatic chronograph. Add to this the fact that it was worn by Steve McQueen in the movie “Le Mans”. From that moment on the watch was assured a place in the list of classic iconic watches. The original design has little changed over the years, so you know that if you a buying a TAG Monaco watch, you are buying a design that is timeless, which it should be when you make that kind of investment. I know that when I hand down my watch to my son in 20 years, it will be as cool and iconic then as it is now.

TAG Heuer have been making intricate and luxury watches for over 150 years, and they are still always trying to introduce new design features never previously seen in watches. Their latest version of the TAG Monaco, the Monaco LS, is the first belt drive driven watch.

Ultimately it is this, originally avante garde, design style which made it stand out. When it was worn on the wrist of Steve McQueen in the Le Mans” movie, its place in watch culture was firmly established. Down the years Tag Heuer have only ever made minor tweaks to that original design, and that is why the watch is so enduring. If it is handed down as an heirloom, it will retain it auroa of cool whenever it is adorned. With the TAG Monaco you are buying so much more than just a watch.

The TAG Monaco comes in a number of designs, and is not just for men. Uma Thurman is the face of the woman’s Monaco watch. My sister, at the same time I bought my watch, also bought a Tag Monaco with diamond surrounded edge. This was a complete coincidence as neither of us knew the other one loved the TAG Monaco. Testament to our independent good taste I like to think.

Buying a luxury watch like the TAG Monaco Watch is a considered choice. You are not just buying a watch, you are buying a piece of precision engineering and classic design. A piece that will be with you all your life, and can be handed down as an heir loom. But from a personal point of view my watch makes a statement about who I am, and is a symbol of where I am in my life. So whether you have a man (or woman) in your life, who you want to make a statement to then you should seriously think about investing in a TAG Heuer Monaco. Whether it is a Fathers Day, Retirement gift, or an engagement present, a TAG Heuer Monaco is a present that will be remembered forever.

I will admit that I am in love with my

CPSC, ATF warn of dangers of fireworks over US Independence Day celebrations

Sunday, July 4, 2010

Last week, U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) held a press conference on the National Mall in Washington, DC, warning consumers of the dangers of fireworks, and advising them of safe handling. They were joined by representatives from the the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF); Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA); the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP); and other national safety agencies. Fireworks are often used to celebrate the United States’ July 4, 1776 independence from Great Britain. The Fourth of July is a time when many US families get together to celebrate, by holding reunions, picnics, barbecues, baseball games and firework displays; however, celebrations often turn sour due to injury or even death, caused by the mishandling of fireworks. In 2009, nearly 19,000 fireworks-related injuries were treated in hospitals, doctors’ offices and clinics all over the country. Around 9,000 of those were to children aged under 18, and 6,000 occurred during the 30 days surrounding Independence Day.

CPSC chairman, Inez Tenenbaum, said that burns and cuts to limbs, the face and head were the most common injuries, and over half of them were due to firecrackers, rockets and sparklers. The agencies were joined at the news conference by Jason Henderson, who was injured in 2007 after building home-made fireworks. He had found instructions online detailing how to build M-80-style fireworks, and after purchasing the chemicals, began assembling them; however, the mixture exploded which resulted in him losing both hands and his right eye, and shrapnel caused multiple lacerations and puncture wounds to his entire body. “Don’t be the show, go and enjoy the show. I want to get people to move away from putting on their own displays and just go and enjoy the free shows. I mean they are free,” Henderson said. “You might as well take advantage of them while they are there. You can spend time with your family instead of being the one to light them and taking that risk.” Henderson also appears in a public-service announcement recently released by the ATF to YouTube, that shows how he has now been fitted with bionic arms.

Agencies recommend attending community fireworks shows held by city or county officials, which are held in a more controlled and professional environment. Additionally, many jurisdictions outlaw either all fireworks, or certain types, such as rockets and firecrackers.

Fireworks increase demands on fire departments and personnel at this time of year, acting U.S. Fire Administrator Glenn Gaines noted. “Four firefighters [have been killed] as a result of illegal fireworks. Calls to EMS [Emergency Medical Services] and fire departments increased as individuals continue to be injured and burned.” The dry weather and heat that many areas are experiencing also elevate the risk of brush and structure fires. The National Fire Protection Association said that over 22,500 fires started from fireworks in 2008.

Consumers who do purchase fireworks are encouraged to follow the following common sense rules: always read and follow directions; always supervise older children and teenagers if they are permitted to use fireworks; never allow young children to play with or ignite fireworks, child-friendly sparklers and “party-poppers” are a fun and safe alternative for them; keep animals inside or well away from the fireworks, the noise will often scare them; never light any fireworks inside buildings; light fireworks on a smooth, flat surface away from houses, dry leaves, and flammable materials; never ignite fireworks in metal or glass containers; light one firework at a time; move away to a safe distance immediately after lighting a firework; never return to a firework that has not ignited properly; never throw fireworks at another person, animal, or property; do not consume alcohol when using fireworks; keep a bucket of water or a hose in close proximity in case of fire, dispose of use fireworks in the bucket of water; buy from reliable dealers; only use legal fireworks; and follow the laws of your jurisdiction.
